My current research focuses on optimizing shipboard underway seawater eDNA sampling systems for detecting rare taxa, particularly baleen whales in the California Current Ecosystem.

To this end, I have optimized DNA extraction and PCR protocols to maximize detection probability of marine mammals from these underway samples.

With these lab and field methods, we have improved detection of baleen whales and acquired detections of other rare taxa like sharks and seabirds.
